MAGUIRE NEBLETT of MaguiresPhoto.com - created this website to assist fellow Actors getting started in the world of performing arts.
Maguire spent 20 years working in front of the camera acting, modeling, performing and singing through the fashion capitals of the world prior to opening her photography studio in 2000 - Studio 418.net - you may recognize her from some of the photos below...
Her photography training began as studio manager to renown NYC fashion and advertising photographer Peter Vaeth - now retired. Maguire lead production teams for national campaigns - hired crew, arranged castings, secured permits and payments, booked travel, ordered equipment, scouted locations, styled wardrobe and applied make-up / hair styling for talent.
During her 18 years as a model, she was privileged to work with top Hair and Make-up fashion favorites including Bobbi Brown, Kevyn Aucoin, Way Bandy, Joey Mills and Edward Tricomi to name a few. While studying their techniques and creating her own style, she was asked to apply hair and make-up for celebrity friends, then photographers, eventually fashion magazines and commercials. Later teaching classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) on color coordinating and blending applications.
In 2000, Maguire bought her first computer and became addicted to the digital darkroom. Her eye for graphics has created known logos and custom web sites for popular artists, restaurants and businesses. Her Artwork can be seen in several restaurants, national banks and corporate business offices.
Take a look at her personal website MaguiresPhoto.com - Advertising, Artwork, Fashion, Portraits, Weddings, etc...

CASTING DIRECTORS GENERALLY LOOK FOR THESE TYPES (All-American, Artsy, Bad Boy/Girl, Bitch, Businessman or woman, Preppy, Comic, Cop, or Agent, Clean cut Military, Dad/Mom, Doctor/Nurse, Sexy Guy/Girl, Best Friend, Ingénue, Lawyer, Intellectual, Laborer, Psychotic, Teacher, Victim, Quirky One, Seducer/Seductress, Slacker, Socialite, Rebel, Villain, White Trash and the Wise One) Your headshot is the first thing they see, from there they decide if you might be right for the role.
You MUST look like your headshot when they meet you! Don't waste their time! It might be best to wear what you had on in the headshot for audition requests.
A COMMERCIAL HEADSHOT is for Musical Theater and commercials. (FUN / SMILING)
A THEATRICAL (LEGIT) HEADSHOT is for Theater and film. (COMPELLING / ENGAGING)
KNOW YOUR MARKET: LA headshots are NOT the same as NY!
LA headshots are more tailored toward each role. Casting people might call the agent and say "we're looking for a 25 yr old hooker, a 12 yr old tomboy and 40 yr old male doctor. The competition is greater in LA, so it is best to have several different "Looks" to showcase the range of parts you can audition for. LA is also body conscience, if you're in great shape, then show it!
In NY and generally through the East coast, headshots are more about you being you. Let's discuss which market you're headed towards before we shoot.
WHAT'S YOUR TYPE? Ask yourself AND others... Which actors do you remind them of, or look like? Be honest with yourself! What roles do/did they play? Then choose a few of those roles you could have auditioned for. We will bring out those characters during your session.
BRING AN ASSORTMENT OF CLOTHING Many of the types listed above can be combined, so bring an assortment of clothes that resemble those different types. Think about your age range - are 15 to 25, 45 to 60? No loud prints like bold Stripes, or Florals. No white, or fluorescents. No logos and No need for jewelry - all of this loudness is a distraction from your face. (Some exceptions, but it should be the eyes that sell the type - not the bling!) The same goes for mens ties - classic and simple design. Bring muted soft, neutral colored shirts and blouses that make your eyes pop. Tank tops are fine as long as you have the arms and body to wear them, especially if you're headed to LA. Otherwise 3/4 and long sleeve is best if your bodies not in the best shape. Be diverse in your selection of colors, necklines and materials. A black leather jacket can look artsy, druggie, rebel, tough and chic, while a pale blue sweater can look preppy, best friend, intellectual, quirky and parental. Bring jeans, dark pants/leggings, khakis, and or a business suit. If you wear glasses we will shoot some with and without. You can bring a few accessories like a french beret, or studded leather jacket, but be careful not to go overboard. (No Dr scrubs, or costumes) Your headshot(s) should lean towards several different characters. Dancers bring a leotard. Please make sure your clothes are washed, ironed and ready to shoot. Maguire will help choose which clothes work best for you and your type.
EVERYONE NEEDS MAKE-UP to remove shine, acne, or rosacea. Come with clean face PLEASE! Neutral, or NO nail polish and your hair styled the way you regularly go to auditions. Maguire will apply your make-up and style your hair further as needed. Gentlemen, feel free to grow some stubble for a few days, then you can shave mid session. We will start with clean and natural with your hair down - casting directors like to see your hair length. We will gradually add to each look, depending on how many outfit changes (characters) we are shooting.
BRING YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC We have a huge selection to choose from, but we can easily plug in your iphone to the stereo.
BUSINESS / CORPORATE HEADSHOTS
Headshots should be shot with warm, neutral solid colors. No white, No fluorescent colors - they will take away from your face. Especially on the Internet.
Gentlemen an off white, pale blue, pink, yellow, or thin pinstriped starchy is best. No white collars. Bring an assortment of classic simple ties. Our focus is your face and a loud tie will be distracting. A single breasted suit tends to photograph better than a double. If you bring a dark jacket, then bring dark pants to match and vice versa. Be prepared to have a little make-up and powder applied to reduce shine, acne, or rosacea.
Ladies stay away from stripes, florals, loud prints, lace, ruffles, scarves and big shoulder pads. A simple business suit, or solid color cocktail dress in muted colors like black, olive, beige, gray, maroon, or blue will photograph best. Sleeveless is fine as long as you have the arms for it, otherwise 3/4 to long sleeve. Bring simple jewelry, or that staple piece you love to wear. Maguire will apply your make-up and style your hair if needed.
Bring warm, muted, solid colors. No fluorescent colors, No white, No stripes, No florals, No checkers, No logos - they will ALL take away from your face.
Bring a pair of jeans, or khakis, a casual button down, a simple blouse, tee shirt, a tank top if you have toned arms, a jacket, or your favorite sweater. Simple jewelry. Come with clean face and neutral nail polish, your hair styled the way you like. Maguire will apply your make-up and style your hair further if needed.
Fashion Models vs Commercial Models: Fashion Models sell clothes in print and on the runway. Some may be lucky enough to get a hair and make-up campaign, but very few. The females are a minimum of 5'9" age 15 to 19. Men 5'11" - 6'1" age 18 to 25. They have gorgeous skin and VERY thin bodies. Commercial Models are any height, any size and sell products like toothpaste, cell phones, pain meds, hair color, candy, etc... they tell a story through a commercial print ad.
Come with clean face, neutral nail polish and clean, dry hair. Gentlemen, feel free to grow some stubble for a few days, then you can shave mid session. Maguire will apply your make-up and style your hair per look. If you have allergies, feel free to bring your own cosmetics. Bring seamless nude color under garments and several choices per look to choose from. No logos please! Props and accessories are just as important as clothes for lifestyle photos. Many models will purchase new clothes for a session, then return them. Just don't wear perfume and be sure to save all the tags. Bring an assortment of accessories, shoes, belts, hats, jewels, scarves, etc... Please have all wardrobe washed, ironed, hanging and ready to shoot. We have a steamer if needed.
Athletic Wear: This look is for commercial models. Think of a Nike, or Reebok ad. Bring sweats, exercise top, athletic shoes, dance leotard, yoga mat, football jersey, golf clubs, baseball hat, bicycle, weights, etc... Remember we want to tell a story and make it look like an ad.
Beauty Shot: For fashion this is the cosmetic campaign. You should wear a color that looks fabulous on you! Something that makes your eyes jump off the page! Commercial Models this is your main headshot. Bring solid muted colors that make your eyes pop. No white shirts - they really wash you out! Tank tops are fine as long as you have the arms and body to wear them, otherwise 3/4 and long sleeve is best.
Casual/Fun: For fashion this is the Target, or Old Navy ad. Bring jeans, khakis, Capri pants, Polo shirt, fun shoes, Rain coat or slicker. Bright colors are recommended. You want to jump, laugh and have fun with this look. Commercial Model's this is a wholesome lifestyle shot, depending on your age. You can be gardening, brushing your teeth, or eating cereal - go through magazines and get ideas.
High Fashion: If you're female and shorter than 5'9" - don't bother with this look. Same for men under 5'11". This is an Armani / Versace / Abercrombie ad. Funky, boho, wild, sexy! Unique hats, funky boots/shoes, unique jewelry.
Lingerie/Bathing Suit: If you're not in great shape, don't bother with this look. Bring a few bathing suits in different styles. An assortment of lingerie, robes, and maybe some sexy shoes if you're not a teen.
Upscale: Commercial Models, this is an ad for an exclusive vacation spot. Bring a cocktail dress, evening gown, tuxedo, suit, formal shoes and possibly someone to dance with.
MUSICIANS / PERFORMERS
Bring clothes that are the style, or image you're looking for. Think edgy, tough, retro, classic, soft, or sensitive...
Whether it's leather pants, an evening gown, skin tight mini dress, torn jeans, or a tuxedo... be unique, and BE YOU! Come with clean face and your hair styled the way you like to perform. Maguire will apply your make-up and style your hair if needed. Don't forget your instrument and any props you might need!
